It has 6 pages, one for each chess piece. Each page has an illustration and a short rhyme. Press the big, clicky button and the book lights up the directions that piece can move.For example, the Rook lights up vertically, then horizontally, then both together. We focus on how the pieces move because we see that as the foundation of chess.

The sweet spot is ages 3-6, but some reviewers tell us their 2-year-olds were moving pieces on a board after learning from the book. Children younger than 3 definitely enjoy the big button and lights with a grown-up, and the build is sturdy and toddler-proof (our own tester was 18 months old). A 7-year-old who’s new to chess can enjoy it as a first step, and adult readers have found it fun too. If your child already confidently knows how to move each piece, another book may suit them better.

Absolutely not! Short rhymes describe each piece and its moves, and the lights show the paths, so even complete beginners can teach it. And if you do play, it's a lovely way to build the foundation before your child is old enough for a real game.

The book teaches how every piece moves, which is the foundation of chess. From there, you can try those moves on a real board (our free printable chess set is a good place to start). To keep the fun going, there’s also Chess Fun Workbook Level 1, with coloring, exercises and mini games on the board.

Let's be honest, your child probably isn't going to be playing a full chess game straight after using this. However, they’ll know the names of the pieces and how they move, which is a huge first step! Strategy and gameplay come later, but this book builds a strong foundation for future chess champions.

We find that younger children love pressing the clicky button to see the coloured lights and patterns and looking at the characters, whereas older children from 3 or 4 will start to understand what's going on a lot better and remember the patterns of how each piece moves.
